Day 16 - End of Exhibition 〰️

21/08/2022 17:55 – End Of An Exhibition

Well yesterday saw the end of an exhibition with lots of communication between me, the artist, and visitors who came to see ‘What Does An Artist Do All Day’.  This has been quite a different show from the exhibitions I am used to putting on.  In many ways it was quite liberating and at times, certainly at the beginning, it felt like I was ‘washing my dirty laundry in public’ by showing all unfinished work, some of them several years old now.  It was liberating in the sense that I felt I could be free to speak about all the not-so-good work that goes into making the one good piece that someone wants to own.  It was good to hear feedback from visitors, particularly the ones that said certain pieces are finished and that to add anything else would spoil the work.  I do struggle at times with overworking a piece.  I keep saying to myself less is more – but still I fiddle and fuss over what should be left alone!

Perhaps my visit to Edinburgh today to see Joan Eardley’s work in the Scottish National Gallery Modern One will help me to stay loose in style and not get too bogged down in detail.  Eardly’s work captures moments in time with narrative thrown in for good measure.  Her landscapes are not just scenes of Catterline.  They seem to encapsulate centuries of life and strife.  Her textural expression of the landscape is so much more meaningful in the ‘flesh’ rather than illustrated books.  A photograph certainly does not do Eardly’s work any favours no matter how well produced.

Another good thing to come out of this ‘out of the norm’ exhibition is the fact that I have starting writing again.  Albeit just a daily Blog but nevertheless it is still writing.  I liked the routine and discipline of recording the daily outcomes and events etc.  Taking photos too to fit in with the writing proved valuable and should be something I strive to do daily.  A visual reflective journal – the sort that helps and promotes self-development.

Today I thought I would show the latest of the Monoprints to be framed:

#1 = Colin #2 = Golden Harvest #3 = Distant Fields #4 = Maria #5 Otzi [Maria and Otzi are meant to hang together]
